چکیده

Differences between avalanche experts and novices have long been cited as a key issue in designing effective avalanche education, yet few investigations have quantitatively explored these differences. In this study, we examine how self-reported training, knowledge, skills, and behavior differ between avalanche experts and novices. From 2002 to 2004, we surveyed 300 avalanche professionals and winter recreationists regarding their demographics, risk taking, experience, training, involvement in avalanches, knowledge of someone killed, seeking feedback about stable and unstable conditions, reviewing of prior frequency of carrying rescue gear, use of avalanche bulletins, and ranking of signs of instability and stability. We received 161 responses, and found numerous differences between avalanche professionals and recreationists across varying levels of expertise. Surprising was the similarity in both groups’ ranking of signs of instability and stability, suggesting that recreationists and professionals had similar basic knowledge regarding avalanche hazard. Correlation analysis of rankings and rank variances suggests that much of the professional respondents’ learning took place through personal experience in avalanche terrain, whereas almost all of the learning by recreationists was the result of training. Recreationists’ apparent lack of success in learning through direct experience suggests a gap between their technical knowledge about avalanches and their ability to apply what they know. These results have important implications for recreational avalanche programs that intend to equip their students for making effective decisions in the backcountry.

Experts and Novices Use the Same Factors–But Differently–To Evaluate Pearl Quality

Well-trained experts in pearl grading have been thought to evaluate pearls according to their glossiness, interference color, and shape. However, the characteristics of their evaluations are not fully understood. Using pearl grading experiments, we investigate the consistency of novice (i.e., without knowledge of pearl grading) and expert participants' pearl grading skill and then compare the n...

Autonomous virtual patients in dentistry: system accuracy and expert versus novice comparison.

This article examines an autonomous virtual patient (AVP) system for identifying differences between novices and experts in dentistry. The two groups in the study were ten boarded or board-eligible experts (seven males, three females; mean±sd age 40±11) and twenty-six fourth-year dental students (fifteen males, eleven females; mean±sd age 27±3), who were defined as novices. All participants int...

Do experts and novices direct attention differently in examining physics diagrams? A study of change detection using the flicker technique

It is known that experts identify or perceive meaningful patterns in visual stimuli related to their domain of expertise. This study explores the speed with which experts and novices detect changes in physics diagrams. Since change detection depends on where individuals direct their attention, differences in the speed with which experts and novices detect changes to diagrams would suggest diffe...

Thinking About Music: Novice and Expert Inductive Reasoning

Recent research (e.g. López, Atran, Coley, Medin & Smith, 1997; Proffitt, Coley & Medin, 2000; Shafto & Coley, in press) has revealed striking expert-novice differences in category-based induction in the domain of folk biology. In this paper we examine the generality of those findings by investigating expert-novice differences in category-based induction in the domain of music. Experiment 1 rev...

Patterns of Multiple Representation Use by Experts and Novices during Physics Problem Solving

It is generally believed that students should use multiple representations in solving certain physics problems, and earlier work in PER has begun to outline how experts and novices differ in their use of multiple representations. In this study, we build on this foundation by interviewing expert and novice physicists as they solve two types of multiple representations problems: those in which mu...
